MCI has given permission to start 21 (18) new medical colleges in country
On 1st July MCI has informed the BBC India that the newly formed board of the Medical Council of India, governed by Dr K K Talwar, gave the approval for 21 new medical colleges in country. The approval was given to these institutions based on the report of the earlier board, headed by Dr S K Sarin. The important message for all new medical colleges is that they are approved, but the board has decided to re-inspect and re-assess these institutions at random basis over the next three months. Dr Purushottam Lal, one of the board members, said that they will investigate the colleges again within the next three months. The colleges have given declaration that they have the best of infrastructure. But if it is found unfit, they may also face legal action.
The board may this time change the inspection method and even include bureaucrats and journalists in its inspection team to make the process more clear and accountable.
Thus on the last day of giving approval, the MCI increased about 1,800 undergraduate seats in country. The total numbers of MBBS seats in the country are 39,785.
